Bangladesh Barta: The youth constitutes one third of total population of Bangladesh. The age group between 18-35 years old is known as ‘youth’. Youth unemployment is a big problem in Bangladesh. Every year about 1.5 million graduates are remaining unemployed. In 2015, more than 40% of Bangladeshi youth were considered NEET (not in employment, education or training) and the portion of young unemployed NEETs was about 80%. More young women than young men are in vulnerable employment. The greatest proportion of women in vulnerable employment can be seen in Bangladesh (90%) while the lowest is observed in El Salvador (35%). Youth suffering from poverty, unemployment and illiteracy are often driven by frustration towards drugs.
In order to develop the youth, Youth Voice of Bangladesh (YVB) has been working aiming at enhancing youth leadership skills & building youth awareness since 2013. Reportedly, YVB organizes leadership programs composed of a monthly training followed by an assignment. In addition to the leadership programs, professional development courses for the corporate executives and career development courses for the students are held. As part of the Youth Awareness program, YVB involves the youth in doing charity works and to take part in important social awareness events. According to Barrister Tareque A. Khondakar, the Founding Chairman of YVB, it is an organization providing platforms for the youth of Bangladesh to raise their voices, to be heard and to change things in their communities.
It pleases me to share that YVB organized a mass career counseling event titled “Corpo-Route Key” having more than 500 university participants from different public and private universities on 12 March 2016 at Hotel Agrabad in Chittagong from 2:30 pm till 8:00 pm. I was fortunate enough to remain present as an invited speaker on this occasion. The career counseling workshop was attended by top corporate icons from six multinational companies. The key personnel were: Rubaba Dowla, Chief Service Officer, Airtel; Asif Touhid, Chief Procurement Officer, Grameenphone; SM Khaled, Supply Chain Director, British American Tobacco; Javed Akhter, Brand Building Director, Unilever; Hemi Hossain, Founding Director, Careers Club Australia; Emma Hart, HR Capability Specialist, Careers Club Australia, Chandan Poudyal, Careers Club Australia and M Nayeem Hossain, President, Alumni Association of North South University (AANSU). The event was ended with the closing speech from the Chairman of YVB, Barrister Tareque.
It was one of the most successful events ever I have seen on career counseling in Chittagong. The speakers shared their experiences, knowledge & ideas regarding the ways of building a successful career in the corporate world. After the end of each speaker’s deliberation, the participants were given time to ask career related questions. As seen, participants were very much excited during the interactive session. As informed, they were highly benefited from the deliberations. Certificates of participation were issued to the registered participants. CVs from the interested incumbents were collected during the event in the CV booths by the companies that included Airtel, Unilever, Grameenphone, British American Tobacco, Brac & Careers Club Australia. It is expected that qualified candidates will be provided with jobs by the companies to start building their professional career.
I personally consider the activities of YVB as performing of great social responsibilities. The functions and activities of this type of organization should be supported and encouraged by all for the development of our young generation and to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of Bangladesh. I wish a continuing success of the organization.
