Farakka dam is destroying Bangladesh, alleges Acting Secretary General; calls for Justified solution

বাংলাদেশ বার্তা (Bangladesh Barta) Desk:   Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 28th August, 2016 urging to find out an amicable and Justified solution of the Farakka dam crisis.

“Farakka dam has become an unbearable crisis for the 16 crore people of Bangladesh. It becomes the core demand of the Bangladeshi people to find out a reasonable and prompt solution to this crisis.

India had built this controversial Farakka dam on the Ganges River in order to deprive the people of Bangladesh from their due rights of water. As per the approval of the first government of Bangladesh, the Indian government had started Farakka dam’s test operation on 21st April of 1975, just for 41 days. In those days, the people of Bangladesh had anticipated the disastrous impact of this dam and hold a major protest. The then popular leader, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani also led a massive long march program towards the dam. Though 41 years have been elapsed but that 41 days of duration of the so called test operation has not been expired yet. As the adverse impact of Farakka dam, a huge portion of land in Bangladesh’s North-Western region is turning into desert. As a common phenomenon of the dry season, water level is going down alarmingly. It also becomes tough to get water from the tube well. Resultantly, crops, trees and plants are being died in want of water. Poisonous arsenic is found in the deep water level, which takes many lives and the overall ecology is being doomed. Many people become bankrupt subsequently losing their homes, crop land and cattle. Many homes and establishments also became submerged due to massive river erosion. Bangladesh is losing millions of money yearly for the adverse impact of frequent floods.

Not only Bangladesh, but also several Indian provinces are being affected by the devastating Farakka dam. Under the circumstances, demands have been raised even from the internal quarters of India to demolish the Farakka dam. To save several provinces, couple of days back, India has opened all gates of the Farakka dam. Subsequently, in Bangladesh, the water of the Padma River is flowing over the danger level and already several districts including Chapai Nawabganj, Rajshahi and Kushtia are suffering from heavy floods.

In this backdrop, Bangladesh desires a Justified solution of Farakka dam crisis. The people of Bangladesh want to see that the government would avoid all sorts of biasness and tricky strategies and undertake some effective and Justified steps to resolve the Farakka crisis through an open minded discussion with India.”
